MyVaccine is an organization with the vision to educate seniors on the importance of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and to efficiently provide vaccinations to all of the senior citizens in the US. This was a design challenge I worked on for 6 days.
Seniors are struggling to find available vaccines nearby, and even when they hear of available vaccines at a clinic, often have to wait in long lines without knowing if they would be able to get a vaccine or if it would run out by the time it's their turn.
There are also equity concerns. Tech-savvy residents in more urban areas have more resources to find vaccines, whereas rural residents do not own the technology & do not have the proper education on how to get a vaccine. More than a third of rural residents are hesitant to get a covid vaccine.
My solution was to create a website that allows seniors to easily search for vaccination clinics in their neighborhood and reserve their covid vaccine online. The website would also have a section on the homepage that educates about the importance of receiving a covid vaccine.
Once arriving at the clinic, seniors would receive a tablet that would easily guide them through the clinic to get their vaccination, and in case of any questions, each station would have a volunteer that would be able to guide them in case anyone has any difficulty using the tablet app, or have any other general questions about the vaccination.
I did some research to gain more understanding of the problem space in order to understand some of the frustrations senior citizens may be experiencing in order to receive their vaccination.
From the research, I was able to uncover pain points of senior citizens attempting to get their covid vaccine, but during the research, I found out that there is a big issue with people in rural communities who do not trust the vaccine and have limited resources to even figure out how to get a vaccination even if they wanted to.
Here are some of the key quotes that I found from news articles:These were the key insights I gathered from the secondary research:
Using the insights I gathered from secondary research, I created 2 personas.
Linda - A part-time professor, wants to get the covid vaccines with her husband. Struggling to find available vaccines & covid vaccination clinics in her area.
Bill - A retired veteran, distrusting of the efficacy of the covid vaccines & plans not to get it. Doesn't own a smartphone or computer.
I came up with 4 HMW statements & started ideating for features that may allow senior users to meet their goals.
I created a journey map of the full vaccination process for the senior citizen, while mapping the patient's journey, I felt the necessity to map out the healthcare provider & clinic assistant's journey as well.I created a sketch of how the clinic layout may look to visualize how the patient will navigate each step of the process in the clinic.
I sketched out screens to represent the experience that I've mapped out before creating the screens in Figma.
Web prototype showing how the user can search by zip code to find available vaccines near them and make a reservation. Interact with the prototype here.
Tablet prototype showing the in-clinic flow. Interact with the prototype here.
Because this was a design challenge that I did on my own, I was not able to conduct usability testing after I created the prototype, but I really wish I had the chance to!
If I had more time, I would’ve explored these ideas further:
Here's a GIF I created of the post-its I used in the process for fun 😛
